State of Game Industry Layoffs – July 2025
Here's a quick overview…
🧠 Massive brain drain: The industry is on track to lose 100,000 years of combined experience by end of 2025 – that’s like 40 mid-sized studios worth of knowledge gone.
👥 6,200+ jobs cut: So far in 2025, more than 6,200 people have been laid off, from juniors to veterans.
📉 Impact across the board: Surveys show 11% of developers have been laid off this past year, with 41% saying they’ve been directly impacted – narrative and junior roles are hit hardest.
🏢 Major studio cuts: Virtuos has trimmed 7% of its workforce (~270 people) across Asia/Europe, and Microsoft’s layoffs (around 9,000) have led to cancelled projects like Everwild and Perfect Dark.
⚠️ Why it’s happening: Overexpansion post‑pandemic, rising costs, and AI-driven disruption are squeezing studios despite gaming’s overall growth.
